John Steinbeck was a truly great American novelist. He was easily on par with Earnest Hemingway and William Faulkner. To think otherwise is to be intellectually chauvinistic in the extreme. After all Steinbeck gave us some redoubtable classics like East of Eden, Of Mice and Men, the Grapes of Wrath and Travels with Charlie. As far as I am concerned it is John Steinbeck and everbody else.
