How would Outliers explain this?

In Malcolm Gladwell's new book Outliers he said that the Slave Narrative was debililating. That is not entirely true. How would he explain such people as Robert Mailer, Oprah Winfrey or George Washington Carver. All of whom are or were African American but all of them were phenomenally successful financially. Success is much more than merely happenstance.
